The last rally of Winter challenged everyone with a variety of less than perfect road conditions. While there was almost no precipitation during the event, a squall passed through part of the course about an hour before the rally, leaving the roads covered in a couple inches of wet slushy snow. Fortunately, the air temperature was above freezing and the cars that had driven on the roads had created a couple of tracks of bare and wet pavement. Some of the roads were less traveled and the tracks were less well defined. This affected Leg 1 and about half of Leg 2. The second half of Leg 2 and the first part of Leg 3 featured bare and dry roads, totally different from the area affected by the squall. Then, about halfway through leg 3 a new condition presented itself: fog. About a mile into the fog, the snow started coming back. All of this happened right where the trap on this leg was, with everyone looking for chevron signs. Most of the competitors found them, and there were a several excellent scores posted for leg 3 in spite of conditions.
Leg one featured an easy calculable speed of 30 MPH over a relatively short, 2.5 mile distance. Congratulations to the non-computer teams who kept their first leg scores in single digits: Greene/Johnson with a ZERO, Stewart/Stewart with a one, Maloney/Boswell with a four, Black/Black with a five, Watt/Watt with a six, Weaver/Weaver with a seven and Mannisto/Mannisto with a nine. Honorable mention goes to the Novice teams of Fetty/Fisher with eleven and Cosand/Cosand with sixteen.
Thanks go out to the people who helped put on the event: ORCA’s Chuck Huffington and Hal Dittman who did registration, start and sweep; PSRC’s Steve Pfau and Scott Margerum who worked checkpoints 1 and 3; Chuckanut’s Ken and Sue Lingbloom who drove down from Bellingham to work checkpoint 2, RASC’s and Mark Nolte who manned the route control after the last checkpoint. Thanks to Pat Biggar and Don Gibson for finding and fixing the calculation error in leg 3 and for helping us score the rally. Thanks to Jack Heppes for his help in scoring the rally. A special thanks to Dave Treen who helped with measurement, ran pace, made the dash plaques and trophies and worked on scoring.
